Apple Watch configuration is one of the most exciting use-cases for operators and MVNOs
Solving IMS configuration problems
Device Entitlement Server (DES) is a mobile network functionality, which helps operators to solve the IMS service configuration problems by introducing a device and subscriber authentication functionality and an OTA configuration for the service settings. When a subscriber connects a mobile device to the network, the automatic device detection of the platform requests for configuration. DES sends the information to operators to automatically authenticate the subscriber
How DES works for apple watches?
Many operators are looking to shut down their 2G/3G connections, creating opportunities for the growth of 4G/5G. A graphic [3] created by GSMA Intelligence illustrated how 64 networks will be shut down between 2021 and 2025. In truth, 2021 saw the highest number of 2G and 3G network shutdowns so far, with this number not set to slow down.
Apple Watch configuration is one of the most exciting use-cases for operators and MVNOs. You can use DES to entitle an Apple Watch to use IMS services via iPhone paired through Bluetooth.
Everything starts when the subscriber pairs his or her iPhone and Watch via the Bluetooth connection. iPhone initiates a Watch sign-up via DES. If the Watch is allowed to use IMS services, the subscriber is asked to provide further information (this might require a web sheet server). DES sends a request to the SM-DP+ server for an ESIM profile with the appropriate rights. The subscriber can begin using the IMS services once the smartwatch has received an updated SIM profile.
